Genetically Modified/Transgenic Foods
Iron rich banana's to help fight anemia
One example of genetic modification in the agricultural field is through bananas in India. In India there is a very high maternal death rate due to having low iron or anemia during childbirth. India is the largest producer of bananas, most of which are consumed on a local level. Scientists working on the problem think that the most logical solution to this problem is to genetically modify bananas to become more iron rich and help fight anemia. (12)The gene in bananas responsible for its iron levels is enhanced with a gene from wild soybeans increasing its nutritional value (13)
