The first GM product

The first company to produce and sell a genetically modified food was Calgene. Calgene made a tomato name Flavr Savr in 1994 that was able to ripen at a slower pace and therefore preserve the taste for longer. In this case they deactivated a gene which meant it no longer was able to produce and enzyme named polgalacturnase which is what made the tomato soften. Therefore the elimination off this enzyme meant that the tomato was able to ripen slower and gain that full flavor.(11) Scientist would have to know beforehand that each gene is programmed to do a different task and that genes are made up off base pairs that make codons that are able to be removed and added. This information is derived from the original ideas of Gregory Mendell and should have been thoroughly studied by the scientists before they attempted to genetically engineer any type of food or crops
