What is Genetic modification in food?

Genetically modified foods are foods, such as corn seeds, that have had their DNA altered or their genes crossed over with that of another organism for the better of the food. The altering of its genes allows for it to grow in a way that it wouldn't normally. Genetic modifications, for example, can genetically modify the DNA of some soybeans with the genes of a certain bacteria so that the soy bean can grow even after it is sprayed with a pesticide. It can allow for a certain crop to produce toxins that it would not usually produce, to kill off any insects that try and harm the crop, allowing it to grow healthier. There have been crops, such as tomato`s, that have been modified to ripen at a slower pace allowing for the vegetable to have more flavour. Over all the purpose of Genetic modification is to better the crop or food for the farmers, the consumers and plant itself. (1)
